What Is Brand, Identity & Logo Design?
Mar 15th, 2020
The logo is not your brand, including not your identity. Logo design, identity design, and brand, are entirely different roles, which together form a perceived image for a business or product.

What is a brand?

The company's image is felt emotionally as a whole.
What is identity?

The visual aspects that make up a member of the total brand.
What is a logo?

The logo identifies the business in its simplest form through the use of marks or icons.

To explain this in more detail, let's be from the top - brand.

What is a brand?

Brands are certainly not an easy topic - all publications & hundreds of books have been written on the topic, but to describe it, you can describe the 'brand' as an organization, means or product along with a 'personality' shaped by the perception of the audience. On that note, it should be stated that a designer cannot "create" a brand - only a pirsawan can run this. A designer just forms the foundation of the brand.
Many people believe the brand consists of just more than one element – more than one color, more than one font, logo, slogan and it could have been more than one music added as well. In fact, it's much more complicated than that. You could explain that the brand is the 'image of the company'.

The fundamental idea and core concept behind having a 'corporate image' is that everything the company cashes in, everything it has, and everything it produces should reflect the values and targets of the business as a whole.

It is the consistency of this core idea that shapes the company, moves it, shows what it means, what it believes in, and why they exist. This is not just because of more than one color, typography, logo and slogan.

For example, let's look at the famous IT company, Apple. Apple as a company, projects a humanistic corporate culture and strong corporate ethics, characterized by volunteerism, good target protection & involvement in society. These business values are proven in everything they do, from innovative products and advertising, to customer means. Apple is a humanist brand that is emotionally over-connected with people – when people buy or use their products or means; they become members of the brand, more like tribes. It's this emotional connection that creates their brand - not just the product and logo along with their bite emblem.

One of the main roles in the company's 'brand' or 'corporate image' is its identity.

In most cases, identity design is based around visual devices used in a company, mostly arranged in a set of guidelines. These guidelines that form identities mostly adjust how identities are applied across multiple media, using approved color palettes, fonts, layouts, measurements and so on. These guidelines ensure that the company's identity is forever coherent, which at its core, indicating the brand as a whole, is recognisable.

The company's identity or 'image' consists of many visual devices:

Logo (Symbol of all identities & brands)

Stationary (Letterhead + business card + envelope, etc.)

Sales Kits (Flyers, brochures, books, web web, etc.)

Products & Packaging (Products sold and packaging)

Uniform (Clothing worn by employees)

Signage (Interior & exterior design)

Message & Action (Message delivered via communication mode not immediately or directly)

Other Communications (Audio, smell, touch, etc.)

Any visuals that represent the business.

All of these things form an identity and must support the brand as a whole. But logos are corporate identities and brands that are fully wrapped into one identifiable sign. This sign is the avatar and emblem of the business as a whole.

What is a logo?

The logo is for identification.

The logo identifies the company or product through the use of a sign, flag, emblem or signature. Logos do not sell the company immediately or rarely describe the business. The logo gains its meaning from the quality of the objects it symbolizes, not the other way around - the logo is available for identity, not for explaining. In short, what the logo means is more important than what it looks like.

To illustrate this concept, think of the logo like a person. We are more content to be called by our names - Budi, Karin, Samuel - than by our confusing and forgotten self-descriptions like "men who forever wear pink and brunettes". With this similar step, a logo should not literally describe what a business is cashing in but, identify the business along with recognizable and memorable steps.

It's important to note that only after a logo becomes familiar, does it benefit as it is intended to run many similar things just as we have to learn people's names to identify them.

The logo identifies the business or product in the simplest form.
