Walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) are marine mammals scattered in the Arctic Ocean and sub-Arctic Sea in the Northern Hemisphere. Walruses are only one species in the family Odobenidae and the genus Odobenus. The species is divided into 3 subspecies namely Atlantic Walrus, Pacific Walrus, O. rosmarus laptevi.

Walruses are easy to spot because they have ivory. An adult Pacific walrus weighs 1,700 kg and is surpassed only by elephant seals. It is a social animal and usually reaches old age.

Walruses play an important role in polar culture, hunting walruses for their flesh, fat, skin, ivory, and bones. In the 19th and 20th centuries walruses were exploited for their blubber and ivory. Therefore the number has decreased in that era, but the number has increased again towards this time.
